You are here: Home / Resources / Home Owner Information Guides Guide 23: FireplacesFireplaces are attractive additions to any home; however, their ultimate benefit is determined by the design, construction methods and maintenance provided. For safe operation, external as well as internal components of the fireplace should be checked periodically. The required frequency of cleaning (creosote removal) will be determined by its usage; if used regularly, it should be checked often and cleaned once a year. Drafting problems can be constant or recur periodically when certain conditions exist. Each situation must be analyzed individually to determine remedial measures required. To help induce an adequate draft, pre-heat the firebox and provide adequate combustion air. |
