Guide 20: Wood Destroying Insects

All areas of North America are subject to infestation and damage from wood destroying insects and organisms in varying degrees. With few exceptions, the common denominator for insect or organism activity is excessive wood moisture levels. This moisture can be due to roof leaks, plumbing leaks, unvented crawl spaces and attics, as a result of construction deficiencies such as wood-soil contact or other factors. Many lenders will require a termite inspection as part of approval for a mortgage. Your local HouseMaster office will be happy to discuss the availability of termite inspection services to you. Carpenter ants are also very common throughout the US and Canada and can cause damage. In some areas, the inspections are called Wood Destroying Organism inspections. This is most common in the Pacific Northwest, but is not necessarily limited to that area. In these areas, structural damage can be a result of dry rot which is actually a wood destroying fungi common to the area.
