Guide 19: Ventilation

Pre-1940`s houses were generally constructed with minimal consideration given to providing an airtight house. This changed in the period extending thru the 1960`s as insulation and weatherstripping material improvements were made and greater emphasis was placed on the benefits of reducing air infiltration for comfort and fuel economy. In the mid 1970`s providing a reasonably well insulated airtight structure became essential and even code required in many areas. Research has indicated that such airtight construction may be undesirable since it does not allow for adequate air changes within living areas.
